The first DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) was released in Japan in November, 1996. The first DVD player and discs were available in the United States in March, 1997. DVDs were created as an alternative to large VHS tapes, which were becoming increasingly outdated. DVDs offered superior audio and video quality, as well as much more storage, making them the perfect replacement. DVDs quickly grew in popularity and began to overtake VHS tapes in sales by the early 2000s. They continued to grow in popularity and by the end of the decade, DVDs were the preferred medium for watching movies, TV shows, and other forms of entertainment.
