The year is 1971 and the general public and the film industry are still unaware of the birth of a great new phenomenon, independent black cinema. More than thirty years after his father's revolutionary film 'Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song', Mario van Peebles is the director and star of a film about his father's first steps in the film industry. Humorous and moving, Mario van Peebles, together with an excellent crew, manages to create a convincing image of Melvin's daring and original film.
