The Sega Genesis is a 16-bit fourth-generation home video game console released by Sega in 1988. It was the first of the companys highly successful line of home consoles and was initially released in Japan as the Mega Drive in 1988. The Genesis was Sega's most successful console and was a major rival to Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It could play both cartridges and CD-ROMs. It featured a wide variety of games, including classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, and Streets of Rage. It was also the first console to feature a dedicated port for the Sega CD system, allowing players to play CD-ROM games. The console was also popular among developers, due to its powerful hardware and ability to program in assembly language. The console was released in multiple variants, including the Genesis II and Genesis III. The Sega Genesis was discontinued in 1997 and was succeeded by the Sega Saturn. Despite this, the console still has a strong following today, and is considered one of the most influential consoles of all time.
